Gandhari and Her 101 Children (Part 3)

The question was why Gandhari tied her eyes with cloth. We try to explain that. Gandhari was a beautiful woman, of course she had some fantasies about her future husband. One day she heard from her own father that she would be married to a blind man. The great poet of epic Mahabharat explained it was despair at its highest level. Gandhari thought a person who was sighted, always stayed ahead than a blind person. She didn’t want to antecede her husband. She might also think that her parents gave her to a born blind man, they didn’t think about her. If her husband can’t see the world, she wouldn’t. This decision was emerged from great regret.

Usually, Groom comes to bride’s house to marry. But in this case the reverse happened. The distance b/w Hastinapur to Gandhar was about 287 km. It was not possible for Dhritarashtra to come. So Gandhari departed to Hastinapur, her companion was prince of Gandhar Sakhuni. Then she reached in capital of Kuru dynasty. There was no description about the marriage ceremony of Dhritarashtra and Gandhari in the epic. There was no need for narration. It just happened one day.

Some things came to us as fate. Gandhari had accepted her fate as blind. Will power of Gandhari was tremendous. Gandhari had patience more than any other character in the epic. In spite of having such unthinkable patience, we saw Gandhari couldn’t maintain her own believes and policies. That is because mental instability of Dhritarashtra somewhat penetrated into her mind. But how did Gandhari give birth to 101 children. This is for next blog.
